How ‘Eyes4zimbabwe’ Began
By Reeve A. Nield
In 1996 as I walked through the Children’s ward at ‘Parirenyatwa Hospital’, Zimbabwe I met a 12 year old girl who had been blinded with bi-lateral cataracts for four years…Just a 15 minute surgery and the following day her eye-patches were removed and she could see…I CRIED!! Shortly thereafter, Laurette Maritz and I walked down the 18th hole at ‘Chapman Golf Club’, brain storming how we could raise money through charity golf events to purchase the much needed medical equipment and supplies to alleviate this debilitating infirmity. Over the past 16 years, Ophthalmic Surgeons and Nurses have kindly donated their expertise giving sight to thousands of cataract blinded Zimbabweans of all ages, including six month old babies! Cataract surgery costs US$20 (medical supplies). ‘Ladies European Tour’ Golf Professionals have volunteered to play in golf fund-raising events, which have raised the necessary funds to purchase vital medical supplies.
