CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The clock is ticking for volunteers at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

“The truck will leave on October 5,” said Organizer Kim Holzer.

This group has a little more than a week left to fill an entire semi-truck with donations. One by one, people pulled up and dropped off items Wednesday night. Volunteers sorted the items and loaded them onto the truck.

“We brought three boxes today,” said Harold Burris.

“Three boxes and three bags,” added Michaele Burris.

Several volunteers and businesses are now helping, but the project all started with one person. Kim Holzer returned from a mission trip to Zimbabwe at the end of August. She said the trip changed her life, especially after she saw people living in the dump, scavenging for food.

“So, they are living in these horrible situations just trying to survive. AIDS has ravaged the country and has left — one in four children in Zimbabwe are orphans,” Holzer said.

She made a promise that she wouldn’t forget them when she left the country. When she got home, she immediately set to work filling the truck with donations, calling on friends to help. This mother of three hopes the donations will arrive in Zimbabwe just in time for Christmas.

“We are about halfway there, so we are getting there. We are close,” Holzer said.

So, there’s no time to waste, but the group would also agree there’s no time like the present to do something that could mean the world for people a world away.

If you want to help them fill the truck, there are two more opportunities before the semi-truck rolls out on its first leg of the trip. There’s a collection on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Cedar Rapids at 4150 Blue Jay Dr NE.

The group said it need clothes, non-perishable food items, hygiene products, toys and medical supplies are all needed.
